In my opinion, because they are so similar to each other and there has been so much confusion over the name, origin, and what constitutes the dish, and the recipes have kinda morphed together over time, my recipe is the classic American Chop Suey with some Goulash inspired twists to add more flavor and variety to the classic New England comfort food. American Chop Suey is a little plainer- just ground beef, onions, diced tomatoes, tomato sauce, tomato paste, elbows pasta and is more of a thicker casserole that isn't baked. While both dishes are very very similar, there are some differences like Goulash usually features potatoes, carrots, kidney beans, different meats (veal and pork), paprika, a lot of spices, sour cream, and is basically a soup. Warm bread slice shattered in butter YUM! It's a quick and easy food to make that can feed a large family on a budget and is a great for potlucks and gatherings!
